Q: Do I have to be African to be in ASA?
A: No, you do not have to be African to be a member of ASA. The African Student Association not only welcomes but encourages students from all ethnicity to be a part of its organization. One of our goals is to share the African and African Diaspora culture with the community, and believe it starts with breaking the barriers formed by cultural differences.
Q: Is ASA solely a dance club?
A: No, we are not solely a dance club, we are a family. The dance team is another branch of the club that we use to promote cultural literacy and expression of the traditions that make up the African Diaspora.
Q: Why is learning about other cultures important?
A: Learning about other cultures is important because not only improves our cultural literacy but also our social awareness. By deepening our cultural knowledge we are able to create an environment that values empathy and the many different perspectives that come with each culture within the diaspora. By learning about our differences and how they make each and every one of us great we are able to not only improve our world but every we space steps into.
Q: What does "the diaspora" mean?
A: Diaspora in short form is the spread of a distinct population across the globe. In ASA, we will discuss the spread of the African Diaspora through the many areas of the globe such as The Americas, The Caribbean, Asia, and Africa. We will celebrate and uplift the many cultures and traditions that were formed in a positive light through many activities and group discussions as well as through public speakers and their perspectives. Although it is a shared common group it is not a monolith, therefore we must give each group its due respect.
Q: How will I benefit from being a member of ASA?
A: Being a member of ASA is beneficial for the single fact of the experience one will get from joining. As the months go by, becoming a part of the African Student Association will further your knowledge about the African culture and its Diaspora, you will be able to meet a diverse range of students as well as have a safe space to grow your cultural literacy through many activities that focus on cultural expression. Most importantly, you will be given the tools to succeed in any environment as you will be able to grow your social awareness, empathy, and emotional intelligence to truly other those around you and the importance of their perspective. You will be able to rewrite history in a positive light and vividly impact everyone you meet through your ability to adapt and accept others through building a sense of community and family.
Q: Do I need to be a member to be apart of the dance team?
A: Just like a tree has many branches it all traces back to its roots. Therefore you will need to be a member in order to try out and be on the Dance Team. We uphold the same expectations of all members to dive further in their cultural literacy, not just their cultural expression.
